Volleyball Camp – Summer 2016 Sister Church Project

Yesterday I asked for individuals to volunteer for a Prayer Team to be the advance team for the summer 2016 Volleyball Camp Sister Church Project. Several of you responded — thanks so much! I’m reminded of the story of Israel facing a vast army in 2nd Chronicles. King Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness and these men went out at the head of the army of Israel. A mighty victory followed! The Prayer Team will be praising God and interceding — in essence going out at the front of our summer outreach. May God make a way and give the increase!

There are two goals to the trip – 1) to continue building relationship with Matthews Church, our sister church in Latvia and 2) to partner with them in an outreach event that we hope will connect young people and their families to Matthews Church. The camp is at the Olympic Training Center in Riga. It will be daily from 9am to 5pm for a week and targets kids from 10 y/o through 16 y/o. Arnija, our planning point person at Matthews Church, is working to send registration brochures to the schools near Matthews Church in hopes that we will have young people from the area sign-up. In addition we hope that some young people from Matthews Church participate in the camp as that will offer another point of connection. Gatis is the other key planner in Latvia. He is a member of Matthews Church and works at the Olympic Training Center and is handling the operations side of the camp.

Suburban is bringing volleyball coaching skills to this project. Laura Schaudt, member of the Oregon State University (OSU) Division 1 volleyball team that went to the Sweet 16 for the first time in OSU history, will lead the coaching side of this trip. Laura currently works for “The Art of Coaching Volleyball” in Portland, Oregon. Brian Schaudt is the head track and field coach for New Hope Christian College in Eugene. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and brings his skills and desire to make people stronger physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to the team. Brian also worked summers for OSU’s KidSpirit Camps and brings skills from that experience to benefit volleyball camp.  Audrey Smith is in her fourth season of coaching volleyball also at New Hope Christian College in Eugene. She played four years of Volleyball at Sheldon High School and coached three years of club volleyball and two years of high school volleyball. Our overall team lead, Carol Schaudt, brings her experience playing basketball for OSU, for the U.S. National Team for 3 years, bringing home a silver medal and two gold medals, including a gold medal from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and then playing semi-pro ball for 6 years in Italy and 2 more in Japan. Along with this experience, Carol is a gifted speaker able to weave humor and story as she shares how God has helped her to grow spiritually.

Again, prayer team member or not, we covet your prayers as we continue moving forward on the path to Summer Volleyball Camp in Riga!
