Day 1.5

It’s been a long day.  I can’t believe that it was only this morning (36 hours ago) that we met at the church to begin our journey.

THE FLIGHTS

Flights went very well.  The youngsters don’t remember back in the day with everyone on the plane had to watch the same lame movie.  Now we each have an assortment of movies, games and music.  It helps make the flight go faster.

Leg room is still a problem.

KneesBut Brian did manage to get some shuteye, until the flight attendant rammed the beverage cart into his knee.  Ouch… that’s gonna leave a mark.

BRS sleep

We were greeted by the smiling faces of Gatis and Arnija.  They took us for our first taste of Latvian food and culture.  It was awesome!

First Dinner

APARTMENT

The apartment is great – photos to come.

OLYMPIC CENTER

We made a quick stop at the Olympic Center.  Gatis gave us a tour and oh yea, mentioned that the final registration count is (drum roll please) 51.  BIG PRAISE!

MATTHEWS CHURCH

To finish off our 36 hours day we attended an “All Night” church event at Matthews Church.  Once a year churches in Riga, and around Latvia, celebrate on the same night. The theme is the same across all churches. This year’s theme was “Light”.

Matthews Choir

Matthews Church has the most amazing choir.  I could hardly believe this was a church choir.  In Latvia they take choir very seriously.  They also featured an amazing guitarist.  The concert lasts until midnight but we just couldn’t hang for the whole time.

One quick stop at the grocery store and we are now back at the apartment and ready for bed.

PRAYER

Tomorrow we meet with the Latvian coaches to go over all the camp details. Pray that God would lay out the plan and that there would not be too many details overlooked.

Pray for the kids who will be attending.  Final count is 51.  That’s officially a sellout. Pray that their hearts would be open for what God has for each of them.

Pray for myself and the other coaches who will be sharing our testimonies throughout the week.

Pray that we create deeper connections with Matthews Church.

Pray that we all get some good sleep tonight.  (Hopefully I won’t look at this blog post in the morning and find a bunch of mumble jumble)

Good Night

Carol

All My Bags Are Packed…

It’s almost time.  Just some last minute packing and double checking of details and the team is ready to take off tomorrow morning.

PRAISE

  • There are currently 48 kids registered for camp!
  • The t-shirts have arrived!  We picked them up this afternoon and they look great.  We ordered a couple of extra long shirts (Schaudt-sized) and yes, they are long… very long.
Extra Long – They weren’t kidding
  • I’m working on squeezing in 75 additional t-shirts into my luggage.  If I have to open my suitcase at customs it’s going to look like I’m not a very stylish traveler.

Packing T's

PRAYER REQUESTS

  • For safe travels tomorrow.  Brian and Audrey will be traveling up from Eugene in the morning.  Laura will find her own way to the airport (via Uber). Rodney will be driving us to PDX and dealing with the morning traffic. Pray that we all arrive and make it through TSA screening on time.
  • For Laura and Audrey (the two volleyball coaches) who will be using the 14 hour flight to work out the final details of the camp schedule.
  • Pray that God would prepare the hearts of the kids to receive what God has for them at camp.
  • Pray for all the coaches, both American and Latvian.  We will all be sharing at some point during the week.  Pray that God would give us the right words and break through language barriers.

Thank you for all you prayer and support.  We are eagerly anticipating what God has planned.

Blessing

Carol

t-shirt_VolleyballCamp_FINAL

Prayer warriors,
Thank you for your ongoing prayers for the Latvia team Summer Volleyball Camp trip. It is incredible to realize that the team leaves next week! Here is the update for today, June 1, 2016.

 PRAISES

  • T-shirts are ordered
  • Registration is going well
  • The on-the-ground schedule is coming together
  • Travel to and from the airports is arranged
  • The over and above offering was very generous

 PRAYER REQUESTS

  • The Over and Above offering really was quite generous and we praise God and the church for this truth. Continue to pray that God will provide for all financial eventualities since not all expenses have been incurred to this point.
  • Carol is still praying and processing through what and how to share each day with the campers.  Also, the other members of the team will be sharing so pray that God provides just the right words to plant seeds of His love.
  • Arnija continues to seek translators for the camp.
  • Gatis continues to seek coaches for the camp. The camp is covered, but it would be good to have one or two more coaches.
  • We are at 28 campers registered, but really want a minimum of 36, preferably 48! Pray that we’ll see many more registrations in this last week of sign-up.
  • Pray for travel mercies and a rich time of all around blessing for our team and those partnering in Latvia.
  • Pray that God would continue to build the relationships between Matthews Church and Suburban Christian Church during this trip.

Thank you Prayer Warriors!!!
Blessings,
Claudia

Summer Volleyball Camp Prayer Updates – 5.12.2016

Volleyball Camp Prayer Requests and Praises

Praise – Last week I requested prayer for the team creating the volleyball camp logo. The answer is included below! Actually a Latvian designer created the logo and it is great! The name of the camp is “Volleyball Day Camp” and the theme is “Building Body, Mind and Heart” or in Latvian, “Volejbola Dienas Nometne: Veidojot Kermeni, Prātu un Sirdi”.

Pray for Carol Schaudt, Laura Schaudt, Brian Schaudt and Audrey Smith that God would prepare each of them for this trip even as they continue to serve Him in their very busy lives.

We need translators in Latvia – I’m guessing at least four, one for each team member. Pray that God will provide just the right persons to be alongside the team in Lativa.

There will be an over and above offering received on May 29 to help with expenses related to this trip. Pray that God will orchestrate just the right amount to cover the camp expenses.

We are working to get T-shirts for the campers and staff created. Pray that this process will proceed smoothly, end up with the right sizes and amounts of shirts, and bless those receiving the shirts.

We would like to send a gospel or some other translated portion of the Bible home with campers. This is a bit more challenging than it seems to an American mindset. Pray that we can find a way to do this!

It is nearing time for the registration process to begin. Pray for Arnija and Gatis as they orchestrate this process. Pray that the camp will fill up with those the Lord wants to draw to himself.

Pray for the overall goals of this trip – to continue building relationship with Matthews Church and to connect some unbelieving children and their families with Matthews Church with the hope of their salvation.

Thank you for your faithful prayers!

Summer Volleyball Camp Prayer Updates

One of the most important elements of our trips to Latvia is PRAYER! We’ve recruited a Prayer Team who are committed to praying over this trip. Here is the praise report and list of requests that went out to the team today. Please pray with us — there can never be too much prayer!

Praise God for what He has already done! At this point we have our team members, airline tickets, and an apartment in Riga for the team all  lined up. We also have reserved the volleyball courts and a nearby gathering hall thanks to our partner Gatis in Latvia. Our Matthews Church Coordinator, Arnija, is hard at work bringing together many details. Praise God!

Prayer Requests

  • Pray for Carol Schaudt, Laura Schaudt, Brian Schaudt and Audrey Smith that God would prepare each of them for this trip.
  • We need translators in Latvia – I’m guessing at least four, one for each team member. Pray that God will provide just the right persons to be alongside the team in Lativa.
  • There will be an over and above offering received at the end of May to help with expenses related to this trip. Pray that God will orchestrate just the right amount to cover the camp expenses.
  • This weekend Carol and Laura will create a logo for the camp. This will be used on camp t-shirts, registration and promotional materials, etc. Pray for creativity and a logo that will capture the essence of this camp. The name of the camp is “Volleyball Day Camp” and the theme is “Building Body, Mind and Heart” or in Latvian, “Volejbola Dienas Nometne: Veidojot Kermeni, Prātu un Sirdi”.
  • Pray for the overall goals of this trip – to continue building relationship with Matthews Church and to connect some unbelieving children and their families with Matthews Church with the hope of their salvation.

Thank you for your prayers!

Volleyball Camp – Summer 2016 Sister Church Project

Yesterday I asked for individuals to volunteer for a Prayer Team to be the advance team for the summer 2016 Volleyball Camp Sister Church Project. Several of you responded — thanks so much! I’m reminded of the story of Israel facing a vast army in 2nd Chronicles. King Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness and these men went out at the head of the army of Israel. A mighty victory followed! The Prayer Team will be praising God and interceding — in essence going out at the front of our summer outreach. May God make a way and give the increase!

There are two goals to the trip – 1) to continue building relationship with Matthews Church, our sister church in Latvia and 2) to partner with them in an outreach event that we hope will connect young people and their families to Matthews Church. The camp is at the Olympic Training Center in Riga. It will be daily from 9am to 5pm for a week and targets kids from 10 y/o through 16 y/o. Arnija, our planning point person at Matthews Church, is working to send registration brochures to the schools near Matthews Church in hopes that we will have young people from the area sign-up. In addition we hope that some young people from Matthews Church participate in the camp as that will offer another point of connection. Gatis is the other key planner in Latvia. He is a member of Matthews Church and works at the Olympic Training Center and is handling the operations side of the camp.

Suburban is bringing volleyball coaching skills to this project. Laura Schaudt, member of the Oregon State University (OSU) Division 1 volleyball team that went to the Sweet 16 for the first time in OSU history, will lead the coaching side of this trip. Laura currently works for “The Art of Coaching Volleyball” in Portland, Oregon. Brian Schaudt is the head track and field coach for New Hope Christian College in Eugene. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and brings his skills and desire to make people stronger physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to the team. Brian also worked summers for OSU’s KidSpirit Camps and brings skills from that experience to benefit volleyball camp.  Audrey Smith is in her fourth season of coaching volleyball also at New Hope Christian College in Eugene. She played four years of Volleyball at Sheldon High School and coached three years of club volleyball and two years of high school volleyball. Our overall team lead, Carol Schaudt, brings her experience playing basketball for OSU, for the U.S. National Team for 3 years, bringing home a silver medal and two gold medals, including a gold medal from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and then playing semi-pro ball for 6 years in Italy and 2 more in Japan. Along with this experience, Carol is a gifted speaker able to weave humor and story as she shares how God has helped her to grow spiritually.

Again, prayer team member or not, we covet your prayers as we continue moving forward on the path to Summer Volleyball Camp in Riga!
